This is probably our most spectacular tour. First we fly two hours to the West of Mongolia to Ulgii, the main town of the province. Ulgii is the only province of Mongolia where the majority of the population isn´t Mongol. The majority are Kazakh nomads but there are also Tuva, Torguts and other nationalities. An exotic mixture which adds to the allure of this remote and pristine area. From Ulgii we drive five hours until we are near the “Five Gods”, the highest mountains of Mongolia (over 4000 meters or 12 000 feet). There we start canoeing in large glacier lakes until – on the fifth day – we reach the fast flowing Khovd fast river. Now there are three days of rapids ahead. At the more easier ones we can go by boat but at the more difficult ones we will have to line.
For the next two days the flow is calmer and we cross a wide bucolic plain with many yurts and thousands of animals. On the last day we enter a desert canyon with steep, many coloured walls until we finally arrive back in the middle of the town of Ulgii.
A prerequisite for participation in the tour is fitness and basic skills in canoeing. You should also be prepared to get wet during the three days of rapids. You will be rewarded with a spectacular trip that takes you from lush meadows among high, snowcapped mountains to Central Asian desert.
This trip is always timed towards the end of the season, that is from the 20th of August onwards as then the glaciers stop melting and the water level recedes.
Difficulty level: Fitness and basic canoeing skills required

The capital of the province has a very special flair. The majority of the population are not Mongols, but Kazakhs. There is also a museum that is certainly worth a visit. (B, D – Hotel).
